Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]
Etymology: Formation like εἶλιγξ, στρόφιγξ, θῶμιγξ, πύλιγγες etc. with close meaning (Chantraine Form. 399 f., Schwyzer 498); further unknown. - The word is Pre-Greek, as the varying anlaut shows (as well as the suffix -ιγγ-). Furmée also refers (276) to an *ὄστρυγξ in ὀστρύγγιον ἡ ἐπιφυλλὶς `racemus' (`stalk of a bunch of berries') (Gloss.; not in LSJ). H. has ἄστλιγγας αυ᾽γάς η ἄστριγγας (276; I have no explanation for αὐγάς); ΕΜ 159, 38 has ἄστριγας.
